Again I have to ask…

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?! It is truly terrifying to me how many dead babies have been found in and around NYC recently. How is it that with all the charity and technology in this country there are still so many people careless enough to accidentally get pregnant because they don’t use any birth control, scared enough that they don’t choose adoption or abortion rather than have an unwanted baby, or sick enough to think that murder is the only thing they can do with their child once it is born?!?!? I cannot fucking believe the audacity and lunacy of people.

I am currently lucky enough to take part in a group workshop concerning the care of toddlers for a month, free of charge. One of the things we talked about last Wednesday was food: how picky toddlers can be, how hard it is to get them to eat what they should, where and when they should, etc. The teacher/group leader stopped us all cold at one point to mention how many people on this earth would be so grateful just to have a bowl of rice; she reminded us how many starving children there are on this planet, and how lucky we are to have the luxury of letting children be fussy. It was all I could do to stop from breaking down, thinking of the headlines I’ve seen recently. It took all the strength I had to fight back the tears, remembering a woman I saw on NY1 speaking of how heartbroken she had been when her baby daughter had died last year… and how enraged she was to hear that another mother had murdered a child in the same apartment building.

I know there is a lot of poverty in NYC. I know times can seem desperate for many young parents. But there are also many people who cannot have children of their own and would happily adopt a baby. Hell, even if there weren’t, there are protective services for children that could be a lot worse.

I just don’t understand it. I hold a baby in my arms five days a week. I feel truly blessed to have the honor of taking care of her. And don’t even get me started on how excited I am to have my own kids someday, the joy I will feel when I bear or adopt them…

I just don’t understand how so many precious infants are being found dead within minutes of where I lay my head down at night… I can’t wrap my mind around it…

How interesting that I read this while giving Thud his lunch. I too have been thinking about both these things a lot lately. What a crazy fucked up world we live in!

and my friend just told me a horrible story about seeing a woman dragging her obese children around McDonalds, then ignoring them for 10 minutes, causing them to try and join my friend in her booth. WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?!? =(
